GM used a lettered system of automobile platform codes for three decades. These letters were used as the fourth position of the VIN. GM encodes the engine type in character 8 of the VIN. The following table outlines the various engines encoded there: Engine codes for passenger cars
Something is wrong with this chart here are two examples; A 1990 Buick Lesabre and its 8th character is a C (partial Vin 1g4hr54C). It has a LN3 3800 engine. A 2005 Buick Lacross has an 8th vin character of 2 (partial vin 2g4wc532). It has a L26 3800 engine. The GM/Buick 3800 GM_3800_engine) even notes that the LN3 was originaly denoted with a Vin code of 'C'
There is another mistake on the engine code M, this M code comes out on the 1995 - 1999 Cheverolet Monte Carlo and the engine is a 3.1 SFI engine. The engine code is not shown here. Different website show different engine codes for this car, best search around on Google. Where else would you look.. is
